Gathering with few people trying to lose weight and listen to their discussion. Almost everyone who is on a diet (or at least on a diet that is working) is convinced that his plan is best.
One person says that it is best to plan a low-carb, like Atkins, another will say that the best is a low fat diet.
“People are committed to a single diet,” said Lona Sandona, assistant professor of clinical nutrition at the Southwestern Medical Center at the University of Texas at Dallas and spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association.
“It’s almost territorial. How dare to meddle with my diet.”
Since almost two thirds of adults in the U.S. are overweight, the question about which diet is best not go away soon. But Sandona and other experts in weight loss is reported for a dubious diet: the weight loss plan is correct that works for you. And you can keep it if it is nutritionally adequate.
Many types of diets can work in terms of helping them to take off some pounds, said Dr. David Schteingart, associate director of the General Clinical Research Center at the Health System, University of Michigan.
But there are benefits and disadvantages with those people, and he agreed Sandona, depending on how each one works. Know the pros and cons can help you decide the best way to lose weight.
With a diet low in carbohydrates, Schteingart said, “what is essentially, and why it works, we also are reducing calories. But as it is low in carbohydrates and high in protein and fat, you feel less hungry, and to comply with the diet is much easier than in a diet high in carbohydrates.”
Schteingart told to limit carbohydrates may also reduce insulin production. This is important for people with weight problems that are susceptible to a condition called metabolic syndrome, which can lead to diabetes, he said. “The low-carb diets tend to decrease insulin levels and increase insulin sensitivity, which is positive, Schteingart said.
But limiting carbohydrates has its drawbacks, he said. People in these diets tend to feel tired because they lack the quick source of energy provided by carbohydrate-rich foods such as bread and pasta, and fruits such as apples and bananas.
Moreover, diets low in fat automatically limit calories because each gram of fat has 9 calories, compared to only 4 calories per gram of protein or carbohydrates. But plans are low in fat and high in carbohydrates tend to make people feel less satisfied, as Schteingart, and people in these diets often complain of hunger.
Bring a low-fat reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, said Schteingart, as it reduces cholesterol levels in the blood.
But two studies published in May 2003 in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that the Atkins approach does not increase cholesterol levels, as you might imagine.
For overweight patients, Schteingart usually a recipe from a diet high in carbohydrates and a high fat and protein. Advises people to be put on a diet to consult your doctor, dietitian, or both, so your food plan can be tailored to your needs.
Sandona tells his clients to focus on a diet at least the type of plan, and more on the basics, such as controlling calories.
“Anytime you have a reduced calorie, no matter how large or small, will have a weight reduction,” he said, although the weight loss could be a while.
It is also a good idea to be more physically active, if your doctor is in agreement, he said.
Sandona tells its clients, be they fans of the plans high in carbohydrates and low in carbohydrates, which should begin to decrease portion sizes. He also advises not to remove too many carbohydrates.
Advises to consume 30 grams of carbohydrates (about two servings of foods rich in carbohydrate) at each meal. For lunch, it could be as simple as eating two slices of bread, Sandona said. (In many low-carb plans, the suggested 60 grams of carbohydrates as the maximum allowed during the weight loss).
Schteingart Sandona as both are in agreement that the most important thing is that people need to limit their consumption of calories.
“People must change their way of eating,” said Schteingart. “This has to be an ongoing process.”
Or, as most overweight Americans know, the weight will return.
